Larger Than Life Lesson
Life in the 60's
She was larger than life, and scarier. My Aunt Delores held the floor when she spoke in the cigarette rasp of a voice. And her laugh! Legendary, very Bette Davis. I always thought the smoking would kill her. Not so. It was the sun.
I was pregnant with my first when I got the call from Mom: her sister Delores had a mole on her shin. It looked ugly; it had been there for sometime because Delores was afraid the doctors would say it was cancer. It was. Melanoma to be exact, and it was too late. It wasn’t long; there was nothing to be done after the initial surgery with the positive lymph nodes.
She was in her 50’s, my age, too young to die.
The best cure for melanoma is prevention. Use your sunscreen; protect yourself and your loved ones. No one is larger than life.
