To My Work Family
I guess I can’t ignore the fact that this is the holiday season. Unfortunately real life doesn’t slow down to allow for leisurely shopping, decorating and menu planning. Now that I have multiple grown children with wives, husbands, fiancés and children the entire last 2 weeks of December has gotten quite complicated.
And the office rolls on as well. My office family, a family that is just as important to me as my home family in many ways, surrounds me. The office family relationships are infinitely more difficult to navigate for me. After more than 3 decades in practice you can imagine how big this extended family is. Some have stayed for years (12 years is the record). Some have stayed for mere days. And a few were asked to find a job that was a better fit. Most are with me for 2 or 3 years and then move on .
It is not easy to work in a doctor’s office and it is even more challenging when all of your patients are cosmetic. They are not sick looking for a cure. They have needs and desires that are the “extras” in life. It is not about need, it is about want. And to work here you have to have a passion for improving people’s lives by giving them these extras. Our patients have many choices on where to go for cosmetic services. It is our team that makes them happy that they chose us.
As for the ghosts of Christmas past, I miss all who have toiled in our little office. Sometimes they come back much to my delight. Today I have 3 great team members who took a hiatus and came back smarter and more invested. Lucky me!
I have never been angry with anyone who has left. Sometimes I am terribly sad, on more than one occasion I have shed tears at the loss of a work relationship. I always reinforce that they must make the decision that is right for them and their family even though I wish it were not so.
So as the holidays engulf us, I feel privileged to have worked with so many women (and a few men) who have been part of our team. I am especially grateful for the team we have today, whose goal is to give our patients the best possible experience, no matter what it takes.
Happy Holidays to all who make Van Dyke Aesthetics the premier cosmetic dermatology practice in the Southwest! Thank you for serving our patients with all of your heart. Thank you for bringing your unique skills, talents and personality to Van Dyke Aesthetics!
(And if you are an ex-team member, remember, you can always come back!)
