The Gift of the Sun
It’s 110, time to take a break from our beautiful Arizona summer. So I was thinking… until the monsoon hit. I sit here in my living room having just braved a torrential downpour, fighting to get home before the flood waters rise enough to cut off my neighborhood. The temperature has plummeted 35 degrees to a balmy 70 as the sun goes down and the water in the pond behind my house rises.
Here is the good news: all this moisture that comes with the passing of summer makes my skin look great, finally hydrated after the long dry hot season.
We all look forward to the end of summer in the desert. Unfortunately the damage done in these months does not end with a drop in the temperature. As a dermatologist I spend a lot of time reversing the effects of the harsh and blistering sun. Long after the sun settles down the wrinkles, brown spots and pre-cancers show up. Too often skin cancer, both the deadly melanoma and the disfiguring basal and squamous cell cancers are the sun’s gift to us years after our first tan.
My expertise is cosmetic dermatology, the medical subspecialty of dermatology that focuses on beautifying face and body without the surgery. Lasers, injectables and innovative skin care are the tools of my trade.
As I make Scottsdale more beautiful, I never lose sight of the fact that the health of the skin is more important than the beauty of the skin. But what makes the skin healthier makes it more beautiful. Lucky us!
Resurfacing lasers are popular for wrinkle reduction but did you know that many of the procedures are FDA approved for reducing pre-cancers? Fraxel Dual is a medium depth laser that removes brown spots and also pre-cancers! CO2 laser, the more aggressive procedure reduces wrinkles, scars and also pre-cancers.
But you don’t have to do laser resurfacing to improve photo damage. Retin A is the original anti -wrinkle (and anti-pre-cancer) skin cream. The third and fourth generation versions of Retin A are known as retinols and retinoids. These have the great advantage of delivering the same therapeutic results without the significant irritation and sun sensitivity. Retinols are much more user-friendly, nonprescription and frequently less expensive.
So don’t feel vain for seeking out treatments that reduce the signs of sun damage. You are in fact making your skin healthier.
