Fun with Fillers!
Fillers have been around for 35 plus years in the US. Pretty much everybody knows that they are used to improve wrinkles in the face. Many think of plumping lips when injectables are mentioned a la the Kardashian Klan. But fillers are so much more than that.
Putting it simply, filler improves the appearance by taking up space. Not unlike air that inflates a balloon by taking up space inside the balloon. We can virtually “pump you up”!
Now think of it differently. The newer fillers are more cohesive and thicker. Consider filler like clay. You can mold and sculpt with it which opens up a whole new way of using fillers. Take for instance a nose. Many people have minor issues with the shape of their nose but it is not a big enough thing to risk surgery. Some nose bumps and dips are surgery worthy but the person is not ready to take that leap. Enter fillers. Voluma, Restylane Lyft and Radiesse are all robust fillers that provide structural support when injected near a firm surface (like the cartilage of a nose). Truly, a non-surgical nose job is possible! It is quick and without down time and cheaper than surgery. On the other side, it will last a year or two, not forever and an expert injector is required because of the delicate area treated.
Other non-conventional areas great for fillers include: deflated earlobes (when your earlobes flop over instead of holding up those diamond studs); sunken temples (a sure sign of aging); bony forehead (again, seen with aging especially in thin folks); hollow eyes that make you look tired when you are not; eyebrows that sag; chins that are too small for one’s face and jawlines that are weak or undefined whether due to genetics or age.
Caution on this though. These may be considered as “non FDA approved” indications. That means that the FDA has not ruled whether or not they specifically think these exact areas are safe to treat. All the fillers I mentioned are FDA approved to be injected into areas of the face that need volume such as “the mid face” and folds and wrinkles all over the face ….. a pretty general description. The reality is that these procedures are commonly done by expert injectors safely and effectively. We have seen some really gratifying results.
